Joyce Kozloff and  Nancy Spero  began collecting information for the Rip Off File in 1972 

 “a report of sexism(rip=offs, put-downs, discrimination) in the Art World and Art Schools.”  

Solicinting input from over 800 women artists, the creators intended to offer 

“a large-scale consciousness raising effort about sexism in the Art World”
